About Scotland and The Trip

Background

In 2010, 201 members of ASGA visited Scotland. We heard from Gleneagles Resort that we had the largest number of Americans to ever play the courses at that resort in a single day.

Four years later, in 2014, 97 ASGA members visited Scotland again.  Nine years have passed and we are now due for our third trip to this beautiful country.

The Kingdom of Scotland emerged as an independent sovereign state in the European Early Middle Ages and continued to exist until 1707. By inheritance in 1603, King James VI of Scotland became King of England and Ireland, thus forming a personal union of the three kingdoms. Scotland subsequently entered into a political union with England on May 1, 1707 to create the new Kingdom of Great Britain. (Thank you Wikipedia)

This trip includes - see green links at the left for details:

  • 4 nights in St. Andrews at the beautiful Fairmont Hotel
  • 4 nights in Edinburgh at the Radisson Blu on High Street (Royal Mile)
  • Golf at the Kittocks Course in St. Andrews (on the Fairmont Hotel property)
  • Golf at the Duke's Course, the only Scottish Heathland venue in St. Andrews
  • Golf at the Glen Golf Club East, one of the most charming courses in Scotland
  • Golf at the Longniddry Golf Club, in an area played by Mary Queen of Scots in 1567
  • Welcome dinner at the Fairmont plus six (6) additional dinners. You're on your own one night in St. Andrews. NOTE: Three dinners during the week will be at the golf course clubhouses. If you are doing a non-golf package, you have a special rate indicating no golf and no dinners at the clubhouses. That reduces your package price by $1230, so please be sure to check the correct package when registering. At our first round on the hotel property (Kittocks Course), you will have dinner with the group.
  • A full, hot Scottish breakfast each morning, yes, haggis, neeps and tatties!
  • Group transportation to all venues, including luggage truck for clubs & luggage
  • Excursion activities visiting, for example, Scone Palace, Glamis Castle, the Famous Grouse and Stirling Castle. We may visit all or just a couple, depending on attendee count.
  • Rates for single or double occupancy; rates include all service charges, value added taxes (VAT) except there is a possibility you will have an optional portage charge at one or both hotels.
  • A discount on spa treatments at one or both hotels

  • Plastic name badge to identify you to other members, given to you at our first dinner gathering

Please check back to this website on a regular basis to review any changes. We will not be sending emails each time there is a minor change. At any time there could be special notices or updates about this event. That info will be posted under the "Emails/Updates" link on the left side of this page.

Before You Travel . . . Before You Sign-Up . . .

There are always risks involved with travel, both in the U. S. and internationally.  This website is about our group traveling to Scotland in August, 2023. Some attendees may wish to extend their trip, adding days before or after.  In any case, we ask that you visit http://travel.state.gov and specifically the United Kingdom prior to making plans or departing.  You must have a current passport in order to enter the UK. Your passport should have an expiration date of six (6) months or more after this event is over. At the .gov site above, you'll see information about pre-trip planning and other very important items.

The American Singles Golf Association (ASGA) is known for its top quality international trips.  For most members, these are a trip of a lifetime and as such, we don't cut corners. You'll be staying at top level hotels and play some of the top courses and have some great meals and make friends that may become lifelong friends.

HOTEL ROOMS & ROOMMATES:  You can register at any time, however, when we fill-up our block of rooms, we may not be able to get additional rooms because the public will be reserving rooms as well. So please don't assume you can wait until the last minute to register. Due to demand, on our last two trips to Scotland, we had to negotiate additional rooms on both trips in order to register all our members. Demand is up and we're in Scotland's prime season for golf. Register right away and if you know you'll have a roommate, it helps if both of you register around the same day.  IMPORTANT NOTE:  If you're the last person to register and you're looking for a roommate and we don't have a roommate for you, you may have to pay the "room-by-myself" package, so REGISTER EARLY to keep from being the last to register!

WORTH CHECKING INTO:  Rick Steves' Travel Tips

Who's Coming:  The "Who's Coming" page on this website will be updated periodically as members sign-up and pay in full for this trip. If you don't want your name listed, please let us know by emailing info@SinglesGolf.com.

Based on our past history of international travel with this size group, 60% roomed by themselves and 40% of our attendees had a roommate. So when we reserve rooms for this trip, we use that formula so the hotel knows to provide an ample number of rooms with two beds and rooms with king/queen beds. Under our group contract with the hotel we'll utilize, we have what are called "ROH" or "Run of House" rooms which means the hotel can put our attendees in any of their rooms in the hotel.  We do that to get our best rates which hopefully gets our best attendance.

Airfare is NOT INCLUDED in any package.  See the "Getting There" tab at left for sample airline rates.

Members Only - You must be a member at the time of the event in August to attend.

Golf

The four courses we will play over our 9-day visit visit are:

The Kittocks Course on property at The Fairmont in St. Andrews

The Duke's Course - St. Andrews

(Duke's Webcam) - Click on large photo to see live webcam.

The Glen Golf Club

Longniddry Golf Club

Golf Play Format:  We'll play USGA Rules of Golf (play your own ball, not someone else's!).

Prizes.  Although we're not on this trip to win prizes or prize money and even though we want to play real golf by the real rules (USGA), we will not have team or prizes based on handicaps. On some courses, we will have proximity (closest-to-pin) competitions for both men and women.  The prizes will be given out at various times we gather as a group throughout our stay or may be given out at the final dinner we have. The prizes will be our $25.00 prize certificates good towards upcoming events, towards your annual membership dues or an ASGA logo'd golf shirt. These prizes are non-transferable.

Caddies and Golf Carts.  Caddies are plentiful in Scotland. Golf carts are not. However, our four courses will all have motorized golf carts, may two or three! Due to a lack of golf carts, we will not have shotgun starts other than the course at The Fairmont, who has plenty of "motorized buggies."

A couple of other things to consider regarding caddies: At a European event years ago, ASGA coordinated getting caddies for players who wanted them. On the day of play, only 75% of the caddies showed-up, leaving some members not the happiest.  So we no longer get involved in doing this for you.  At some point, we will post contact information on how to reserve a caddie and you can make arrangements for yourself, in writing, via email. Please notify Tom@SinglesGolf.com if you believe you'd like to hire a caddie on some or all days and will it be a caddie for just you alone or for your foursome (fore-caddie).

Regarding fore-caddies, the issue here is that you would need to have everyone in your foursome agree to pay their share of the fore-caddie cost.  In past years, one person paid it but did not get reimbursed by others.  The best scenario is to arrange a fore-caddie once you've met your playing partners at the event (the day before) and then call ahead to the course to arrange for the fore-caddie.  This way, everyone can pay their 25% share of the fore-caddie cost.

Golf Club Movement.  At present, we have arranged for the motorcoach company to carry your clubs to the courses in the storage area under the coach. You will need to stay with your clubs to make sure they are loaded and unloaded at each movement.

You will be asked to bring your golf clubs after your round to the transportation truck or motor coach where personnel will load your clubs. Please do not leave your clubs on your cart at the end of each round.  In the end, every member is responsible for the safe-keeping of their own equipment. ASGA is not responsible for lost or stolen luggage, golf equipment, personal items, etc.  Make sure you do not leave valuables, memorabilia, etc. in your golf bag and make sure you understand where your clubs will be returned to if you are renting clubs.

Golf Club Rentals

With the cost of taking your clubs to Europe on the plane, past trips have indicated that 25-30% of our group prefer to rent clubs while on major trips such as this one. If you're interested in renting clubs while in Scotland, we have made these arrangements:

ASGA has spoken with Jack at GolfingToYou.com regarding some of our needs to rent golf clubs. Here is Jack's proposal to our Scotland attendees:

We will have a rental set delivered to Fairmont Hotel and collected after your final round At Longniddry as you come off the course.

We will deliver the golf clubs in the morning of your first round (we can arrange to be there a few hours before the first tee time and will arrange a meeting point at the clubhouse or hotel).

GolfingToYou.com will collect your clubs as you come off the course so collection time will vary.

We stock Callaway and Titleist and have sets for left and right-handed players, women and men, with shafts as follows:

- Regular
- Stiff
- Regular Graphite

- Left handed

All sets include a sleeve of 3 balls, bag of tees, umbrella, towel and club cleaner.

Tentative Itinerary

Your Program & Pairings Guide will show your final itinerary, dates, times, etc.  It will be emailed to you as a PDF about five (5) days before we leave from the U. S.

In the meantime, here is the tentative itinerary for our 2023 trip:

Friday, August 18 - Depart from the USA on an overnight flight to Edinburgh, Scotland. You'll most likely arrive early in the morning the next day.

Saturday, August 19 (Night 1 at the Fairmont Hotel in St. Andrews) - You arrive in Edinburgh today and head to the area where taxis, Uber and/or Lyft can take you to the Fairmont in St. Andrews, about 80-minutes away. Because our attendees will arrive in Edinburgh at a variety of times from 5am to 3pm, you'll have to arrange your own transportation to the Fairmont Hotel. ASGA will try to accommodate small group transportation in the instance 4 or more members arrive around the same time to share cost of getting to the Fairmont in St. Andrews which is about an 80 minute drive from the airport.

Depending on how busy the hotel was the previous night and how early you arrive at the hotel, you may have to wait several hours for your room to be ready. Ask if the front desk will notify you via your smart phone and when your room is ready, you'll want to catch-up on some sleep.

ASGA registration will be in the lobby from 4-5pm so please let us know you made it and check in. We'll then gather at 5:00pm downstairs at the hotel for drinks (cash bar), followed by Dinner #1.

Sunday, August 20 - (Night 2 at The Fairmont Hotel in St. Andrews) - Today we'll do some excursion activities, no golf. Dinner #2 at Forgan's on Market Street in St. Andrews, 7pm.

Monday, August 21 - (Night 3 at the Fairmont Hotel in St. Andrews) Shotgun start at Kittocks course on hotel property. We'll have a private tour company give you a tour of St. Andrews this day departing from the hotel. Dinner on your own after the tour in St. Andrews (scatter!)

Tuesday, August 22 (Night 4 at the Fairmont in St. Andrews) - Golf day at The Duke's course  - dinner #3 at the Duke's clubhouse.

Wednesday, August 23 (Night 1 at Radisson Blu in Edinburgh) - Motorcoach to the Radisson Blu in Edinburgh. Check-in. Use your Hop on / Hop Off ticket and/or Edinburgh Castle tour + dinner #4 at Mansfield Traquair. (Note, we have to have a minimum of 50 going on this trip in order to have dinner at Mansfield Traquair.)

Thursday, August 24 (Night 2 at Radisson Blu in Edinburgh) - Golf at the Glen Golf Club East - Dinner #5 at clubhouse. Optional ticket to the Military Tattoo at Edinburgh Castle.

Friday, August 25 (Night 3 at Radisson Blu in Edinburgh) -  Golf at Longniddry Golf Club - Dinner #6 at golf clubhouse.

Saturday, August 26 (Night 4 at Radisson Blu in Edinburgh) -  Explore Edinburgh + excursion day - Dinner #7 (Awards banquet etc.) - Packing night.

Sunday, August 27 - Return to the USA. We'll typically depart at a variety of times so group transportation will not be available. Suggest using Uber or taxi to get to the Edinburgh Airport (EDI) this day. You'll return this same day to the USA.

NOTE: We will work-in various excursion activities throughout the week based on the interest level of our attendees and will update this website as we get closer to the event.

ASGA Transportation & Airport Shuttle to Hotel

The cost of transport from and to the airport and hotels is borne by you. Note that transportation between all courses and hotels is "group transportation," or a motorcoach or vans depending on volume of attendees.

At the Airport.  Edinburgh is a medium-sized airport. When you clear customs and get your luggage, you'll exit the public area where you'll see many drivers holding up signs. You'll want to go to the Uber or Lyft pick-up area and secure your ride to the hotel.

For our Terms and Conditions, Indemnification, etc., click here.

If you're concerned about our cancellation policy or that something might come-up, you may want to purchase travel insurance. See the link to the left.

All registrations for non-domestic events are subject to the following conditions:

1. Credit Card or Debit Card Payments to ASGA.  Any credit or debit card payment to ASGA, before, during or after the event, will carry a 3% surcharge.

2. Exchange Rate.  All prices are based on an exchange rate of £1.00 = $1.25 per www.xe.com as of May 17, 2023 (date of this website's release to the membership). If there is any variation +/- 1.00% from this, you will be billed the difference or you will be refunded the difference.

3. Itinerary Changes.  ASGA reserves the right to make changes in the itinerary as needed as long as the attendee receives the other item(s) with the same value.  In other words, if a golf course needs to be changed because we don't have the requisite number of players or if we have too many players, then a comparable course (dollar-wise) will be substituted.  If the alteration is major, such as deleting the number of days in the trip, you will have the option of accepting the alternative arrangements or receiving a full refund.  No refunds on golf if there is rain UNLESS the course is closed and the course provides a refund to us.

4. Airline Reimbursements.  ASGA shall never be responsible for reimbursing you for your airline and/or travel expenses in getting to or from this event.

5. Emergency Contacts.  ASGA asks that you provide ASGA an emergency contact number in the instance you are personally injured, can't be found, or any other emergency situation at the time of registration.  By signing-up for this event, you release ASGA of any liability for any loss, damage or injury while partaking in this event, unless ASGA is found negligent in any manner.

6. Force Majeure.  ASGA accepts no responsibility for and shall not be liable in respect of loss or damage or changes caused by force majeure events such as strikes, riots, political unrest, viruses, war hostilities, or threat of war, terrorist activity, industrial disputes, fire, flood, weather problems or similar events beyond its control.

7. Website Description.  Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of descriptions and information. However, we are not always able to control all components of the arrangements and it is possible that an advertised facility may be withdrawn or changed, due to weather conditions, lack of demand or for maintenance, renovations etc. We will advise you if we become aware of a major change.

8. If You Have a non-ASGA-related Complaint.  Should you have any complaint not related to ASGA, you are urged to discuss it at the time with the airline, hotel, course or other entity. If your complaint is not resolved or if you believe ASGA can assist you, please notify an ASGA representative as soon as possible and we do our best to assist you with your concern if it is within our ability.

9. Group Travel.  This event is considered group travel, meaning you enjoy the event as part of the overall group.  Our group may travel together, typically in a motorcoach at certain events. If you miss your group transportation on a given day, the group shall continue on its schedule without regard for your situation and it is up to you to find your way to meet up with the group ahead of you. Motorcoaches depart from our various locations at stated times so make sure you're on the coach. We will wait no longer than ten (10) minutes for you on any motor coach departure. As the saying goes, "if you're on time, you're late!"

Please note that the group leader has reserved the front right two (2) seats on all motorcoaches we utilize each day.

ASGA is not responsible if you miss any group transportation, group events, golf, dinners, etc. and there shall be no price adjustment unless the fault lies with ASGA.

10. Food.  ASGA understands that some individuals have special dietary needs.  It is not up to ASGA to seek you out, but you must contact ASGA in writing (Info@SinglesGolf.com) and notify us if you have special needs at least three (3) days prior to the event in which food is served.  For more details, see the green tab on the left side of this page under MEALS.

11. Golf Cancellation Due to Weather.  If the golf course closes due to weather, we believe the course will refund our golf costs. If the course is open and there is rain, there is no refund to you on golf fees unless the course refunds ASGA. Please be prepared to pack rain gear, umbrella, etc. in your luggage or golf bag.
