Mid-West Regional News The Midwest Region of ASGA includes the following chapters: Chicago, Cincinnati, Columbus, Indianapolis, Kalamazoo, Kansas City, Milwaukee, and Southeast Michigan. Southeast Michigan The Southeast Michigan Chapter of the American Singles Golf Association (ASGA) is a group of single men and women who love to play golf and socialize in a welcoming atmosphere of fun and friendship. Comprised of more than 145 members, we actively participate in golf and social events throughout the year. Cincinnati OH Our Cincinnati chapter of ASGA is best described as a group of members who love the game of golf and who value a fun atmosphere. Our chapter meetings are social mingles on the third Monday of every month. We welcomed sixteen guests to our meetings or golf events this year with twelve becoming members. Wintery Ohio weather didn't stop the fun as our social calendars were filled with get togethers. Sharpening our euchre and poker skills, challenging our minds with trivia nights or attending cultural and local events were only the start of many social activities we enjoyed during the off season. Adding board games, happy hours, bowling, pool, rooting for our favorite football teams and celebrating holidays with special parties, we kept busy. As a chapter, we recognized the fun events of golf and social outings are only part of our chapter image. This year our group adopted a family of six for the holidays with members donating over $600. With the addition of $100.00 from the treasury, members shopped, wrapped and delivered the gifts. The activity created dialogue about how we as a chapter can contribute more of our talents and time in the future. Before our annual opening overnight golf outing, members met with a local pro to get tips on how to improve our games. Taking the pro's suggestions and applying to our game, our chapter opened our golf season with an outing to Lexington, Kentucky with our Indianapolis chapter friends in April. Overnight outings were a great success this year and more new outings were added for the first time. Road trips were taken to Sultan's Run in Jasper, Indiana and Zanesville, Ohio, playing the beautiful courses of Eaglesticks and Longaberger. Our Indy friends have been active participants in our overnight outings and the 2007 plans include even more shared activities which include the planning and implementation of an “I74 Challenge” match. Throughout the season we managed to have a golf outing on the average of every other week. More new members stepped up to the plate and hosted an event. Since Cincinnati has an abundance of great affordable courses in the tri-state area, a variety of challenging courses were available. Team games and scrambles complimented the member’s handicaps and playing abilities We are extremely fortunate that our chapter has so many great people in it. Without these people, and their efforts, our group would not enjoy the great golf outings and fun social events that build friendships and make our chapter what it is...great. Several of our members enjoy attending the multi-chapter events nationwide. Others are very happy just participating in our local golf outings. We have a great group and we are very excited about our future. - Marsha Barnholtz, Chapter President, mbarnholtz@aol.com
Indianapolis Chapter The Indianapolis Chapter of ASGA (IndyASGA) meets monthly with a wide range of social activities and weekly golf outings on great courses throughout the Indianapolis area, including premium courses. In 2006, more people played golf and attended the after golf socials than ever before. We had 52 different members play this year and several guests. Some of the awesome courses we golfed included The Fort at Benjamin Harrison, Martinsville Country Club, River Glen, Twin Bridges, Eagle Creek, Timbergate, Southern Dunes, Golf Club of Indiana, Winding Ridge, Saddlebrook, Winding River, and more. One of our new members shot a whopping 79 at Hickory Stick! This is the exception – most of us are a work in progress - J - we golf for fun! We also emphasized the social nature of our club this year by paying out over $1,200 in prize money to 36 different members and 3 guests. We emphasized hospitality to our guests this year by giving all a special IndyASGA gift bag when they attended a meeting or golf outing. Our Golf Chair also spiced things up with “Sadie Hawkins Day” and “Gentlemen’s Pick” events. You can’t please everyone all the time with every event as we all have our own special preferences, but 2006 was a tremendous year for IndyASGA with a good variety of fun golf outings for everyone. IndyASGA was also able to join CincyASGA at Sultan’s Run in Southern Indiana around the 4th of July which was just a wonderful time. It was so nice to be able to meet such great people. We played two rounds of great golf, had a fun and festive evening at Schnitzelbank’s, the infamous German restaurant in Jasper, and then followed the evening at a local pub where we learned a new game – LCR – which we brought back to IndyASGA and have enjoyed so much throughout the year. We hope to have more joint outings this year, perhaps even a Ryder’s Cup event. Some of our members also attended ASGA National events, including Pinehurst, NC and, as usual, they rave about the quality of the accommodations, the fun and exciting people they meet and the great golf courses. At our monthly meetings, we were able to give away free rounds of golf and free golf items that were raffled off, including golf balls, towels and other golf accessories – thanks to the hard work of one of our members in securing these items for us. In 2007, we hope to have more 50/50 drawings and other fundraisers to continue to engage the memberes in IndyASGA activities and put a few more dollars in our coffers! We also worked hard to support ASGA in getting their wonderful brochures out to a large number of golf courses to help promote IndyASGA and singles golf. Those courses who agreed to let us place a brochure stand in their pro shop have been listed on the ASGA National website under “Preferred Courses” of the Indianapolis Chapter of ASGA. We hope to add more “preferred courses” throughout 2007. We followed that up by sending Christmas cards to all of the courses we played this year, as well as our “Preferred Courses,” to thank them for their support of IndyASGA! IndyASGA also had many fun social events throughout 2006, including a Super Bowl party, duckpin bowling, virtual golf at Southern Dunes during the winter, card parties, cosmic bowling which was a blast, pool parties, a fun and casual feast at the beautiful home of one of our members after golf, a big birthday bash at the home of one of our members complete with band and pool, and we all got together at Chalkie’s to play cards and watch the last day of the Masters on the big screens. The group also toured the Hilbert Mansion at the Decorator’s Showcase and counted the many greens needed to build this breath-taking palace. One of our members hosted a Halloween party, another member rented a cabin in the woods where we had a beautiful fall evening with great food and many laughs as we again played LCR. (Rumor has it that cabin is already reserved for 2007). Then, we jumped on Amtrak and took the train up to Chicago for the day where we dined at Mike Ditka’s and enjoyed shopping, sightseeing and games en route. We went to the Fall Golf Show at the fairgrounds and we ended the year at The Rathskellar for a great wrap up to a great year at our annual Christmas party with our fun and competitive White Elephant gift exchange. Each fall, we also combine numerous local singles groups with IndyASGA in a 9-hole singles scramble. Groups which have participated in the past include 45+, Amy Owens’ Groups ARS/Irresistable Singles, St. Luke's Singles and Kokomo Singles. This is always a great event and brings together singles for a fun, friendly, non-competitive round of golf, usually as the leaves are changing and the air is cool and crisp. There is always a good turnout and it is always a great day!! Unfortunately, this year it was rained out, but we plan to not let that deter us from a great event in 2007. In fact, our Membership Chair has a creative plan to inspire these groups to join us this spring in a Glow-in-the–Dark golf event to kick the year off. Pictures say a thousand words…and how true that is when you look at the great pictures of all the various events we did this year in IndyASGA. Check out our 2006 pictures on the IndyASGA website at www.indianapolis.singlesgolf.com. As you can tell, we have a lot of fun, make some really great friends throughout the year and who knows, maybe even improve our golf score along the way!! This is not a competitive golf group. This is a group of neat people who enjoy golfing. We would love to have you join us! Please take a minute to look over our website, take a peek at our newsletter and give us a call if you have any questions. All of the 2007 IndyASGA officers are listed on our website and in our newsletter. We are more than happy to answer any questions. We meet on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at various locations set out on our website. Please join us - we promise to treat you with true Heartland Hospitality! We have more than 100 members and we are constantly searching for others looking to join us. Our chapter actually straddles the state line between Kansas & Missouri. Thus our members live in two different states. Our Golf Chair is currently planning our schdule of tournaments and "18 Wine & Dine" events. We plan for two events per month during the golf season. And once again this year we will be heading to the Lake of the Ozarks in the Spring for a three day golf weekend. And in the Fall, it is off to Branson, MO for another three day outing. Our Social Chair has plans for a Superbowl Party in February, several Watch Parties to cheer on area College Basketball teams, a Dinner/Jazz evening at Gas Light Grill, a bowling party and hopefully a Casino Night in March. We also have First Fridays at local eateries dispersed around the Metro all year long. The annual banquet will be held at Leawood South Country Club in November and it will cap off our year. As other ideas are suggested we plan some spur of the moments events, so check our calendar often to see if something appeals to you. We like to play golf here in Kansas City, but we also like to party. So there is something to offer everyone. Here it’s not just golf, it’s also social. We meet on the third Thursday for our monthly meeting at Birdie's Grill and Pub, 8889 W. 75th Street, Overland Park, KS. Social time is from 6:00 -6:30, the meeting is 6:30 and many members stay after that to eat dinner and socialize some more. Guests are always welcome at any of our events. So if you are single, like to play golf and you want to meet others who have the same interests, check any one of these options to contact us. Visit our website www.kansascity.singlesgolf.com , or you can reach me at (913-780-3066) or just stop by our meeting and say "Hi". - - Sandy Kolderup, President |
